1) Prone to Sensitivity
Our skin is said to be prone to irritation as we have a thinner stratum corneum or the outermost layer of skin, compared to other ethnic groups. As a result, Asian skin becomes extremely sensitive to environmental factors and chemicals, which can disrupt the skin’s pH level.
We need to be more careful with what products and treatments we use on our skin as most of us may not react well to harsh treatments such as peeling or acidic chemical solutions.
2) Scars more Easily
Because of our thinner stratum corneum, it is also said that Asian skin are genetically predisposed to scar more easily than others. Hence, greater care must be given when one has acne breakout and when one is trying to heal from some skin scarring.
Do not go squeezing that pimple and poking at that acne. Use gentle products like emu oil or Vitamin E to heal the scars.
3) More Issues with Hyper-Pigmentation
All skin contains about the same number of melanocytes but the amount of melanin they produce varies. Melanin is a natural skin pigment that protects the skin from UV damage. Obviously, dark skinned people produce more melanin and light skin people produce less. While research have indicated that Asians have more photo-protective pigment melanin.

Use sunscreen religiously and use a product containing gentle skin brightening properties from your early twenties. Avoid hydroquinone!
4) Loses Moisture Easily
Asian skin showed the highest levels of Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL), as well as increased levels of permeability. TEWL is the amount of water vapor lost through the skin under non-sweating conditions.
We need more skin hydration and it’ll be good to choose a moisturizer high in water-binding ingredientssuch as hyaluronic acid.
5) Gets Oily More Easily
It is often said that Asian skin has more sebaceous glands and is oilier than Caucasian skin type. This might have to do with the weather as well but it is generally true that most of us are constantly fighting to keep shine away from our skin.
Our skin may get clogged easily and it’ll be good to exfoliate once or twice a week. In addition, do not use harsh products that will strip away our natural skin lipids and make the skin oilier.

6) More Resistant to Aging
While we have a thinner stratum corneum, we also have a thicker dermis that contains greater collagen. This means that our skin show fewer signs of pre-mature aging.

Celebrities Skin Tips

I particularly like this post from Porcelain Face Spa's blog, so am sharing it.

Molly Sims
Molly Sims (39 Year Old) is an American model and actress. Sims is best known for her appearances in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues and her role as Delinda Deline in the NBC drama Las Vegas. She is also an ambassador for Friends of El Faro.

1. They do it themselves.
Molly Sims make her own concoction. “I mix honey and moisturizer and put it all over my face. It’s a great exfoliant. I leave it on a few minutes and wash it off.” A lot of top Hollywood dermatologists insist that natural and simply way to go. Most of them recommend dry oatmeal as a natural scrub and a simple egg mask.
Check out some of the Home-Made Mask Recipes here!

Jessica Alba
Jessica Alba (31 Year Old) is an American television and film actress. Alba is considered a sex symbol. She appeared on the “Hot 100″ section of Maxim and voted number one on AskMen.Com’s list of “99 Most Desirable Women” in 2006, as well as “Sexist Woman In The World” by FHM in 2007.

2. Celebs know that no matter how exhausted they are, the bathroom sink is their best friend.
You should never, ever, go to sleep without washing away your make up or your face. “There are nights when I’m tired or bust with my daughter, but I do force myself to wash up and moisturize,” says Jessica Alba. In another word, don’t get into the habit of sleeping with your make up on.
p.s this includes mascara because your lases will break off if you sleep with a layer of black goop on them

Kim Kardashian

Kimberly Noel “Kim” Kardashian (32 Year Old) is an American socialite, television personality, model, actress and businesswoman. She is the face of “Kiss Away Poverty” campaign by Fusion Beauty & Seven Bar Foundation.

3. They clean their cell phones.
Here’s a fact you might not know: Your cell phone is a bacteria farm because you spend all day pressing your fingers and/or face to the pad. The dirt and oil in your face embeds itself on the keypad and then you smash that against your face. Once in awhile, take a alcohol swab, not dripping or you’ll spoil your phone, and disinfect.
Don’t harm your skin unknowingly, find out what are some of the factors!

Katy Perry

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (28 Year Old), better known by her stage name of Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter and actress.
4. Go Green Tea!
Katy Perry is a great fan of green tea and products that contain this magical ingredient. In the past it’s no secret that the young singer struggled with acne. However, the ingredient managed to cleanse her complexion from zits. During the summer it is extremely important to consider the condition of our pores. In order to keep them clean and free from dirt and oil excess it is highly recommended to use a tonic that has this beneficial ingredient.
Find out more on how Green Tea is beneficial.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Mary Kidman, AC (45 Year Old) is an Australian actress, singer, film producer, spokesmodel, and humanitarian.
5. They avoid staying under the sun
Nicole Kidman is famously afraid of the sun. We can’t totally stay out of the sun, but she tries to stay out of it at all cost. In fact, many other celebrity simply avoid the sun by wearing hats, and slathering on sunscreen. Everyone knows that sun is the #1 cause of premature aging.
Find out what is the difference between Sunscreen & Sunblock.

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Joanna Aniston (43 Year Old) is an American actress, film director, and producer.

6. Simple Tricks
She has her well-defined beauty routine, Jennifer claims that the secret to beautiful and kissable lips lies in a simple beauty trick. Every morning the actress puts half a teaspoon of sugar on her toothbrush. Pouring some water on it and scrubbing her lips with this mixture, creates a glamorous effect. Jennifer Aniston also swears on the ice pack method to refresh her complexion. After she wakes up she places these little bags on her eyes, keeping them for 10 minutes. A quick trick to hide dark circles and puffiness. As I did mentioned in my post here, taking good care of your skin today is going to benefit you not only for now, but for the many years to come.

Sharon Stone

Sharon Vonne Stone (54 Year Old) is an American actress, film producer, and former fashion model.

 7. Diet & Habits
Does Sharon even look like she’s in her 50s? No! The first thing you notice about Stone is that even without makeup, she appears preternaturally youthful for a woman about to hit the midcentury mark. “Not in that I’ve-had-my-entire-head-Botoxed way that so many women in Hollywood do, but like someone with enviably good genes who doesn’t smoke or drink coffee and probably does Pilates.” says Sharon.
Find out what are some other do’s & don’ts.

Skin Woes

Advertorial

I was born milk coffee colour like Pocahontas while my elder brother came out like fresh milk. My mum couldn’t resist kopi-o after her first child you see. Not only did I not come out as Snow White, I inherited my mum’s bad skin. She had bad acne as a teenager which then later turned pockmarks like Mark Lee. All that was salvaged later on in her adult years, thanks to facials and skincare.

That's a studio shot of mother & daughter, no photo editing.
My mum gets hysterical whenever strangers comment how she looks like my sister. She is very proud of not looking her age (56). I aim to be like her one day. She was appalled with my pimply skin at puberty, so my self-esteem plummet. She introduced me to facials and skincare when I was 15. Costing $35 at Far East Plaza, I saved on skincare by dipping into her pots. That did not get rid of my pimply skin.

Only when I turned 19, then I realized I have been doing it ALL WRONG for the past 4 years!! Thankfully, my skin wasn’t beyond help. I was using the wrong skincare (mum’s for mature skin, thus oilier), the facial treatment wasn’t suitable either.

I am an active girl, and being active means being out in the sun. I’m not a vampire you see, I am not only active at night. Besides, being out in the sun prevents jaundice (although I’m no longer a newborn), it also provides Vitamin D that you can’t get from food.
Being active also makes you more attractive to men (because you look fun and adventurous). Although I must stress, there are men who prefer the fairer sex who can be go-getters too despite the skin colour.

Most importantly, having a bikini tan line undeniably gives the illusion of a fuller chest. Tested and proven!! *cheeky smile*

However, as The Internet tells us (I read it off the Internet is the new My Friend told Me), the sun is very bad for our skin. It causes premature aging, dehydration, pigmentation and many more. The end result could be as bad as a smoker’s skin.

Doing a lot of sports (perspiration, hot yoga=bacteria on mat) gives me breakouts. That’s what I’ve been battling with lately (I thought puberty was over!)

It’s a tough decision. I can either a) not exercise, get fat but have clear skin OR b) exercise, be sexy but bad skin.

I have asked men before which will they prefer. A not so pretty girl but hot bod OR a fat girl but pretty face.

Many went for the plain Jane with a hot bod. I guess its like bedding Stephanie Sun or Britney Spears! Hot bods with bad skin. Check out celebrities with bad skin here.

Bella Skin Care told me I can have the best of both worlds. The White Renew Chargold Therapy . Blocked pores, dull skin, uneven skintone, pigmentation, blackheads and whiteheads. All signs of congested skin and often affecting not just teenagers, but adults too. Damn right it does!

All these congestion is giving me adult acne, and when you get adult acne, it doesn’t heal as fast!

So they lay me down for a simple head massage while letting me breathe lavender oil. You start relaxing and drifting into lala land. I get self conscious about sleeping with my mouth open, drooling or snoring. Most of the time, I won’t remember the awesome shoulder massage the therapist performs because I was in such deep sleep. They even have paraffin wax for moisturizing your hands too!
Nothing turns a man off clasping a hand as rough as his (this is why they love long hair too because it’s a contrast to their short crop!)

The White Renew Chargold Therapy is appropriate for clogged pores because naturally you’ve have A LOT to extract = pain! Therefore a sebum lotion is applied first, to make the gunk surface up, for easy (minimized pain) extraction. Then an ultrasonic spatula is used to gently eliminate uneven skin tone, blemishes, rough skin, excess sebum & surface pigmentation. Aloe Vera gel (healing properties!) is then massaged into the skin. Ending off with a charcoal mask with GOLD pigments. Well, the gold is really there for anti-aging properties as it reduces toxic free radicals (that you get when you exercise a lot!) I felt like Cleopatra. All in one for the woes I face as an active sportswoman!

Project BBC

I’m naturally curious about a lot of things. Recently I was invited to a Dr.Ci Labo event where food was served (don’t you know, with any media conference, you need to serve food and give freebies. I’m not quite sure if this is the standard procedure for media conferences around the world, or only because we’re Singaporeans ;p) and products were given.
We were challenged to try the products for 30 days and then write a review as we deem fit.
Now, I used to have bad acne. My mum had it when she was younger, now her face is a lot better but you can still see battle scars. So I guess I inherited that from her. After visits to the doctor, going for facials and using Sunrider to work from within, my skin has reached a level where it is envied by some, if not most of my friends.

I did not want to rock the boat. I wasn’t sure if Ci Labo is as good as touted. I have learnt from my mistakes not to be cheap-skate, just because it’s free, then I should use/ do. Yet, I am curious. I’m an adventurer.
Suddenly, I had an inspiration! Not only am I going to try Ci Labo for 30 days, I will embark on the experiment if papayas make your boobs bigger and pineapples make you taste sweeter.

Thus, Project Bigger, Brighter, Cleaner. It sounds like I’m doing something to my eyes and teeth.

Bigger
I’ve long heard that papayas can make your boobs bigger. The Taiwanese swear by papaya milk, my Malay ex-colleague swears by chicken drumsticks (hormonal injection is jabbed into their thighs). I’m not quite sure about milk being in the equation because if you put on weight, naturally you will have increased fats around the chest, as well as the mid-section. Still, I’d give papayas a try; after all, it is one of the few fruits rich in estrogens (female hormones).
I plan to watch my weight as the days go by, so that it would be a fair test. That it is not because of my increased weight that I am now a cup bigger, but because papayas is really the miracle growth fruit. I did not want to get cut papayas from the fruit stall in the canteen (I hear they soak them in sugar water to prevent fruits from deoxidizing. Haven’t you realized fruit stalls NEVER get a bad fruit? Whereas if you buy from the supermarket, it’s pretty much luck if you get a sweet one), so I asked my mum to buy me a daily supply from the supermarket.
She asked why do I want bazookas, and she said I should resign to genes. Then she said, my puberty stage has passed. She then said I will turn ORANGE (jaundice) if I eat too much papaya. She is such a wet blanket!
But as with all scientists, I will preserve.

Brighter
Dr Ci Labo is a cult brand in Japan, a skincare formulated by a team of skin doctors. Its brand mission is to only use natural ingredients that your skin needs. Preservative, fragrance and chemical free, it sounds like something I would use! However, I looked up reviews and many people mentioned that it is too rich for Singapore due to our humidity levels. I am wary about this; I don’t want to be battling another bout of acne, worse if it’s ADULT acne.

But I’d try, with caution.

Formulated in Japan, made for the Japanese. Of course they won’t neglect the whitening function. This, I will try on my body (although it’s meant for the face), I’ll see if those mosquito bite scars will lighten.

Cleaner
My friend ended things with a girl he’s been dating because she tasted and smelt foul. She was a beautiful model, yet lived on a diet of macaroni and cheese. I don’t think it’s because of her odour, that he didn’t give her a second chance. He just wasn’t that into her at that point in time. I have had friends who’d still do their lover, with blood and all. An African friend even told me consummating during periods will create a special bond for 7 years (sounds like voodoo to me :P )
Hygiene is important when a couple engages intimately. However, sometimes spontaneity removes the availability of water or a shower. So how then do you make sure that you taste and smell good 24/7 down below? I have heard too often of men and their rotten fish/ oyster jokes.

Women in general, can taste and smell differently on different days depending on her menstruation cycle. Men have described to me that women taste metallic on certain days, salty on others. Most men are happy to be allowed down south on the one they love, the smell and taste then don’t matter that much unless you’re as foul as macaroni and cheese. They’ll be pleasantly surprised if it’s sweet smelling nectar that greets them! I did a taste test on myself (yes, I am THAT curious), I’ve tasted my own blood too (not my menstruation blood lah!). The first time, I did taste metallic. I tried a second time months later, and got a neutral report back. In other words, bland and in stricter terms…BORING!!

Onions are said to make you bitter. Chocolates and dairy products make you bad. Pineapples on the other hand, is said to make you like nectar.

Count down to Project BBC.
