Teenage is a time when all of us have issues with our skin, isn’t it? The reason this happens is because our bodies change, develop or evolve the most during teenage years. The changes our body goes through in these years (13 – 19) are hormonal changes.

At times these hormonal changes in turn give rise to skin problems. For example, acne is a problem mostly all teenagers suffer from. Due to such problems, or because you don’t want to face such issues, skin care is a must. Skin care measures, again, differ depending upon age and sex of a person. If you take care of your skin right from the beginning, there is no reason why you shouldn’t have a clear and healthy skin throughout your teenage years. The natural skin care tips mentioned in the paragraphs below are simple, yet very helpful. Simple hygiene at times can do wonders for your skin, and protect it from all problems, even in later stages of life.

Understand Your Skin Type

Understanding your skin type is the first step towards taking care of your skin. The other skin care tips will depend solely on what type of skin you’ve got and so will the type of cosmetics you pick up. Your skin type will also determine the skin problems you are prone to, and also the intensity of care you need to take. Usually it’s not difficult to know your skin type. You can know if it’s oily or dry just by observing it for a few days. If you are still unsure, you can contact a skin specialist.

Cleansing

This is one of the most important skin care tips for teenage girls, and for all other women out there too. Cleansing your face is very important, at least two to three times a day. Cleansing helps clean all your pores and all the dirt from your face. If this dirt gets settled on your face, it’s going to block your pores and lead to black heads. It’s even worse if your skin type is oily. In that case, you will have to cleanse your face at least 4 times a day with cleansing milk and then wash it with face wash. Using a scrub once in a while will add to clearing of pores and eradication of settled dirt.

Diet

Following a good diet is also very important if you want to have a clear skin and is perhaps the best skin care tip for teenage girls. Teens tend to fall prey to bad eating habits and devour a lot of junk food, but you need to learn where to draw the line. Drinking a lot of water will surely benefit you in more ways than one. It’ll help in keeping your skin clear and smooth. Some foods also help in fighting acne, such as apricots, carrots, oranges, broccoli and strawberries. Foods like these contain vitamins that are essential for good skin.

Exercise

Exercise is another important factor that helps to maintain good skin. Though this isn’t one of the direct skin care tips, it is very important if you see its benefits for healthy skin. When you exercise, you sweat and in this process, you let out a lot of toxins. If these toxins stay inside your body, they’re bound to show their effects on your skin which is not what we want, do we? So, exercise a little throughout your teen years to add to skin care.
Now that you know these skin care tips for teenage girls, you can start taking care of skin soon. Remember, skin problems can turn into serious issues if you don’t take care of them in time. Maintaining hygiene at all times is necessary if you want to stay away from all these problems, or if you have them and want to bid them a final goodbye.

Fruits and vegetables are vital to our health but many of us are guilty of the lack of these included in our diet. Instead, the processed food that we so commonly eat outweighs the intake of fruits and vegetables which are rich sources of nutrients, vitamins and fibre, essential to our overall well-being.
Following up on our previous blog post on fruits, we now share with you which kinds of vegetables can benefit your skin (and of course your health too)!
Carrots
Carrots are high in beta carotene, which are absorbed into the body to aid in the production of Vitamin A, which is necessary for healthy, glowing skin. Large amounts of vitamins (K, C and B6) and carotenoids (anti-oxidants) found in Carrots can help combat free radicals that causes damage to skin cells. Consuming Carrot juice can also keep your skin hydrated. However, do eat Carrots in moderation as excessive consumption may cause the skin to have a slight yellow/orange tinge.
Broccoli
High concentrations of Vitamin A and Vitamin C can be found in this cruciferous vegetable. Vitamin A helps in the production of healthy cells in the skin, while Vitamin C helps the skin with collagen repair and production, while protecting the skin from free radical damage. Broccoli also contains a great source of folate, which is essential in healthy cell regeneration, and sulforaphane, which studies have shown that it helps in reducing incidences of cancer.
Tomatoes
Studies have shown that properties in tomatoes help function as an internal sunscreen that blocks harmful UV rays. High concentrations of Lycopene found in tomatoes also help in skin renewal, and has anti-ageing properties for the skin. Moreover, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium and Potassium in Tomatoes are effective in tightening your pores, and also work as an astringent to deep-clean. For a quick home DIY facial, try mashing up tomatoes and apply to a clean face.
Garlic
Garlic is widely known for its strong medicinal value, despite its pungent smell and taste. Holding anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties, Garlic helps to relieve skin bacterial infections thereby helping the skin to stay clear and free from impurities! The large number of antioxidants present will also make your skin healthy and looking young.
Potato
Potatoes are high in starch and thus are a good source of carbohydrates, but it also means that they are culprits to your weight gain. However, do you know that Potatoes can be included into your skincare regime as well? Potatoes have properties that make it an anti-aging agent. Washing your face daily with potato juice may help improve the skin’s clarity, and even reduce appearances of wrinkles! Additionally, you may wish to cut a few slices of raw potatoes and place them over your eyes to reduce dark eye circles.
Cucumber
Cucumbers are often used in skincare products as it is really an effective vegetable that helps one to achieve glowing skin, treat various skin problems and even reducing dark eye circles. Containing antioxidants and large amounts of water, Cucumbers help to moisturize and hydrate tired skin. Cucumbers can also help to reduce redness of the skin. Also, Vitamin C in Cucumbers aids in collagen production, which helps to promote elasticity in our skin.
Avocado
Avocado is rich in nutrients and vitamins A, C and E which helps to soothe and soften the skin. Also present is Niacin (Vitamin B3) which helps to soothe dry, irritated, or red blotchy skin. Avocadoes are also great for making facial masks at home as their buttery texture allows easy application, and what’s more is that the various nutrients and vitamins can be easily absorbed into the skin, leaving your skin feeling smooth and soft after application.
As the saying goes, “you are, what you eat”. Don’t forget the importance of including both fruits and vegetables into your diet for a healthier you, and a healthier skin. Fruits and vegetables have abundant nutrients and vitamins that act as our skin food whether they are being consumed, or applied as a mask!

It’s summer time! This is the perfect time to be flaunting your perfect bikini figure at the beach. But hold your horses babes! Don’t forget to protect your youthful skin while having your fun and games! Repeated or prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation leads to skin cancer. Your skin also starts to age prematurely if you don’t shield it from the harmful rays of the sun. You can find out more about the sun and premature aging here.

With the sun being so evil, our only protection against it is to slap on sunscreen religiously.

Sun Protection Factor, more commonly known of SPF, measures the extra length of time a sunscreen will protect your skin from reddening or burning. A generally the higher the SPF, the more protection you have. For example, without sunscreen, you can usually stay in the sun without reddening or burning for about 20 minutes. Theoretically, a sunscreen with SPF15 should increase your skin’s protection levels by 15 times. This means that your skin should be able to last for about 5 hours, instead of 20 minutes. However, that does that mean that if you apply a sunscreen for SPF15, you will definitely be fully protected during the 5 hours. Sunscreen will wear off after a certain time.

It is important to know that layering products with sunscreen doesn’t give you more protection against the sun. On the contrary, you are only given the protection of the highest SPF. For example, you use 3 sunscreens of SPF 15, 30 and 60 at the same time. This does not mean you have SPF105 worth of protection. You are only protected with SPF60.  It is also not advisable to skimp on sunscreen when you are indoors. UV rays are still able to penetrate the windows and glass. Similarly, it is also not advisable to skimp on sunscreen on cloudy days.

According to Patricia Agin, director of photobiology research at Schering-Plough Corp., the maker of Coppertone products, sunscreens work by either absorbing or reflecting and scattering UV.  This means that most of the sun’s harmful rays don’t get to penetrate or damage your skin when you use a product with a minimum of SPF15. It is highly recommended to use a broad-spectrum coverage, meaning a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB. This information can usually be found on the product label.

1. Apply sunscreen SFP 15 or higher 20 minutes before going outside
2. Remember to re-apply sunscreen!
Set your cell phone timer to remind you to re-apply sunscreen every two hours when you are outside. Sunscreens often degrade in the sun – “all-day protection” does not exist.
3. Avoid the hottest time of the day – Between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm
4. Don’t forget your – Lips, Ears and Eyes
If you’re worried about melting sunscreen that irritates your eyes, you can try using lip balm with SPF 30+ on both your lips and your eye lids. It doesn’t bother the eyes and it stays on really well.
5. Always choose a Broad-spectrum sunscreen to block both UVA & UVB rays.
6. Use water – resistant sunscreens
This is useful whenever you go swimming or exercising as your perspiration will wear the sunscreen off. Water-resistant sunscreens are also useful for daily use in Singapore’s humid weathersince we tend to perspire more.
7. Exfoliate often as it helps the skin absorb moisturizers in the sunscreen
8. Seek shade especially when you feel your skin burning
Don’t worry if you’re currently using a sunblock! Sunblock also shields the skin from the sun’s harmful rays, deferring only in mechanism. Sunscreens usually lasts for about 3 years so invest in a good one and start including sunscreens in your daily skincare routine to fight the prowess of the evil sun!(:
